Policy EQ8 – Pollution Control identifies noise as a pollutant but fails to identify vibration. I am also unclear on what is meant by the wording 'the potential adverse effects would be mitigated to an acceptable level by other environmental controls'. I would expect development acceptability to be solely based on planning control assessing, and concluding that the mitigation measures included in the proposal were effective. Policy EQ8 details the need to consider the design of noise sensitive

Searches on the term 'noise' in the Options Plan reveal direct mention within the 'Conserving and enhancing the natural environment' the Strategic Objectives of the Plan(3.5-10). Further indirect consideration arises within the objectives of 'effective use of land', 'well design places', 'promoting healthy and safe communities' and 'delivering a sufficient supply of homes'. The noise impacts of aircraft within the Yeovil, Ilchester and Ilton areas are also highlighted with a need for considerati

Significant parts of South Somerset, those parts in this AONB in particular, have especially dark night skies. The dark skies of this AONB are internationally recognised and it would be appropriate for the Local Plan to include policies aimed at minimising light pollution and conserving dark night skies. This AONB is, as I expect you know, in one of the darkest parts of Southern England and hence the visibility of stars, and the Milky Way, is a key attribute of this AONB. The AONB Partnership is, therefore, very concerned about light pollution. Development that could contribute to light pollution, and hence impact adversely on those dark night skies, has to be modified so that such impacts are eliminated. Any external lighting should be explicitly approved by the Local Planning Authority and com

Policy EQ8 – Pollution prevention We would recommend that reference to sustainable urban drainage systems for the new build developments to reduce urban diffuse pollution is included within the document. Policy EQ8, should be amended in paragraph 'v' to: ......or cause contamination of land and/or controlled waters.

POLICY EQ8 POLLUTION CONTROL The policy does not cover the need to control residential and other regularly occupied/sensitive development in locations likely to be adversely affected by the operation of sewage treatment and sewage pumping facilities. Buffer zones should be maintained around Sewage Treatment Works (STW) and Sewage Pumping Stations (SPS) to minimise conflict with surrounding land uses and amenity issues. We suggest the inclusion of the following within the proposed policy; Resi

Policy EQ8 relates to pollution control and contains measures to ensure that development proposals do not have adverse effects on the environment. Gladman note criteria (ii) which states that "New development should not exacerbate air quality problems in existing and potential AQMA's, and development will need to support the objectives of the AQAP" (our emphasis). Gladman do not consider this approach to be soundly based as it will apply the same level of protection on areas not identified as AQ
