2.1 Milborne Port Section 8.53 - Proximity to Sherborne

Milborne Port is in the far south eastern extremity of South Somerset, in a promontory surrounded on 3 sides by Dorset. It is only 2 miles from Sherborne, albeit over a county boundary and in Dorset.  The recently revised West Dorset Local plan has approved and planned for an additional 279 new houses (with provision for affordable Housing), with additional new employment land at the Barton Farm site in Sherborne. (with a provision for a potential 30 more on the former gasworks site)

Conclusion: In reality Milborne Port shares a very close proximity to Sherborne, much greater than to the South Somerset District whose boundary stretches 33 miles to the south west. The true housing need in Milborne Port, for people working in/or with families in the district is actually very limited, given a large tranche of new development now being built at the Barton Farm site, and set to continue to do so into the future.

Conclusion: Milborne Port should have a smaller house building target commensurate to this true local need, considering many new houses due to come online in Sherborne, where much better amenities exist.
