POLICY IL1 – HOUSING & EMPLOYMENT PROVISION NORTH OF TROUBRIDGE PARK, ILCHESTER

The National Trust owns Lytes Cary Manor to the north-east of Ilchester. The grade I listed Manor house was the home for 500 years of the Lyte family and is now open to visitors. The associated estate extends to some 148 ha and includes one field to the south of the A303 alongside the old Roman Road (Fosse Way) – search online for ‘NT Land Map’ to see the location.

In January 2018 the Trust expressed concerns about a potential sizeable northward expansion of Ilchester, in the direction of Lytes Cary. The current proposed allocation does not extend quite so far to the north. Should a housing and employment allocation be taken forward in this location, we would want to see built development that respects the surrounding countryside, avoids excessive lightspill and has considerable boundary vegetation and screening, particularly at its northern edge.

In addition, the new housing should be provided with sufficient public open space, either on site or nearby. Opportunities should also be explored to provide cycle and pedestrian access along the old Fosse Way to link up with Lytes Cary.
