Our Client generally supports Policy EP8, which seeks to sustain the vitality and viability of tourism in the District, through new and enhanced tourist facilities within defined settlements. Development of this nature would serve to enhance the status of the settlements as tourist destinations. However it is considered that Wincanton Racecourse provides the ideal opportunity to accommodate further development outside of the existing settlements, being an existing tourism and leisure destination

Explanatory paragrpahs create confusion of intent. Either the Council wishes to promote and increase the industry or it considers growth to be unacceptible. "..... enhanced tourist facilities will be supported where: They are of a scale appropriate to the size and function of the settlement within which they are to be located." For any business to be successful, it must expand and increase turnover, number of visits therefore amenities to support the growing volume.

Tourism could be enhanced by advertising the quality of Conservation planned for the Abbey Park, under Higher Level Stewardship, for which we have been invited to apply. Much of the land in the Parish is noe under DEFRA agreements and there is a footpath to the Flood Detention Barrier, which could be part of an educational offering.

Bourne Leisure endorses the content of the tourism chapter and paragraphs 8.68 and 8.69 in particular. For properties such as the Cricket St Thomas Hotel, and as occupier and operator of this historic building and grounds, the maintenance and enhancement of the whole facility is vital and secures its long term viability - as recognised in this chapter. Allowing operators such as Bourne Leisure to take forward small but significant projects and also more comprehensive schemes, often involving th

Bourne Leisure seeks clarification within paragraph 8.67 and Policy EP8, which state that proposals must ensure that the District's tourism assets and facilities are accessible through sustainable modes of travel including cycling and walking. Whilst Bourne Leisure endorses the general principles of this policy, the Company would emphasise that many rural tourism uses, such as hotels, are car dependent due to being in locations where it may be difficult to provide access by more sustainable tran
