It is suggested that the AONB Management Plans should be acknowledged within this section/diagram as they are a statutory requirement of the local planning authority and a material consideration decision in the planning process.

General comment It is understood that the Core Strategy should not repeat national planning policy however it is felt that it should show how national policy is interpreted and implemented at the local level. With this in mind it is felt that many of the sections are too general, or indeed very technical, and do not highlight the unique qualities of South Somerset such as the AONBs and other environmental assets.

This section would benefit from being strengthened by the inclusion of additional factual information, particularly in respect of biodiversity, as well as further commentary on special qualities and environmental assets. (The final sentence of paragraph 2.29 would seem to support this suggested approach).

Policy HG8 We welcome the intent of final bullet point in this policy, since matters of siting and landscaping are important factors in how successfully building fit within the landscape. We do however suggest that the point be reworded as follows: '...the integrity of national and international wildlife and landscape designations.'

Addressing Climate Change - Paragraph 12.9 The reference to AONBs in respect of adverse impacts is welcome. The Blackdown Hills AONB has recently published a study we commissioned setting out what forms of renewable energy are most appropriate in the AONB.

This is very lengthy and detailed but the intentions are supported. It is suggested that paragraph 3.4 would be strengthened by adding the following: ...'and continue to protect its distinctive urban and rural environments, nationally and internationally important environmental assets and high [quality] landscape character areas...' In respect of the above it looks as if there is a word missing or some other typo in the reference to landscape character areas.

While it is recognised that the policy approach provides flexibility and may enable development proposals, it is not at all clear how the council will determine what is justified and commensurate in any given location.
