We support the approach inherent in the Core Strategy, which seeks to reduce the need to travel and to promote sustainable travel choices. We acknowledge the challenge of reducing travel by car in South Somerset due to the rural nature of the District, reflected in a level of car ownership which is relatively very high. However, this reinforces the requirement for effective demand management, given the constraints already affecting transport infrastructure including the SRN.

We are very encouraged by the Council's approach to reducing reliance on the car through the provision of innovative solutions to encourage use of sustainable means of transport. As previously advised, we are particularly supportive of the Council's targets to secure a high modal share for sustainable modes in new development across the district, notably 50% in connection with eco town and urban extension proposals.
